Art and Charity in Our Community
Flashback ’08 was put in place to encourage artists to incorporate positive messages in their music; the underling cause for this event was to stop violence in the communities of Thorncliffe Park and Flemingdon Park. The proceeds of the event go to a charity called You Move. There were performances by MC’s, Beatbox crew, poets, and dancers. That’s not all, there was food catering brought to us by Mark Garneau High School students aaaaand there was raffles to top off the event!
The Host Sheldon Francis introduced him self and the performers throughout. Crow and Mint rapped a track they made about Barack Obama; they also did some beatboxing. Abdullah Ayaz recited a poem of his; Flemo City Media was one of the major sponsors and Tommy Spitz along with Jaa-Goo took the stage and did some positive raps. Another performance was done by StrokeS who had the whole room’s attention with his positive rap on women. Both at the beginning and the last part of the night there were dancers who left the audience in awww and even had the room standing! Danyal sang quite a few songs during the night. Adding more commotion was the poetry freestyle battles, rap battles and beatboxing battles. The winners are as follows: StokeS (rapper), Loko (Poetry), and Mint (Beatboxing)!
Abdullah organized the event to spread a positive vibe in his direct community. He had the help of others and many important sponsors to make the charity event possible. Mrs. Magloire was there to support the cause; after winning a prize, she gave a small speech. Kathleen Wynne, the MPP of the communities was also there in support. The tables where filled with people and as a result Flashback ‘08 raised $1300 for the charity You Move to buy Christmas gifts for children.
