Underground Industry- Get on The iPod
In the past two years Canadian artists have finally got fed up with being compared to the United States and decided to push forward with our unique styles. Instead of getting signed to a label
that has increased the number of people listening to underground music particularly in the Hip Hop and Jazz genres found in statistics Canada reports. With this comes higher numbers of artists
joining the market now with more hope for success and more small business opening to contribute to this growing trend. Use of the internet has made it easier to communicate on a large scale with
networking communities and social communities making target market reachable at a low cost.
There are many different talents in the underground industry and that number continues to grow. It is now the job of the individual/ group to stand out against the rest of the
competition. Everyone has their own strategies to accomplish goals but in order to last there are a few things to keep in mind:
Be an Individual
Promoting Talents
Benchmarking
Creating Partnerships
Travel
Track and Evaluate Numbers
2006 Canadian statistics show that the number of Hip Hop and Jazz album sales were the only genres to grow while other genres such as rock, country, and children’s music fell. This
says that more Canadians are listening to hip hop and jazz music and this trend is not likely to stop. Most of us can already tell by the increase number of events held for and by underground
artists and businesses, along with artists entering the industry. Further more industry giants such as Akon, Gene Simons, and Lil Wayne have shown support in our independent movement coming to
Canada to get new fresh talent; a big change from the past where Canadians pretty much had to go to the States.
When it comes to sales promotions it is fact that most independent crusaders use the internet to do so; most popular Facebook and Myspace more many reasons. First comes the talent to
create and than the ability to push it in the right direction. If you promote your selves in an organized fashion it is much easier to hit a “Bulls Eye” on your goal. Anyone can have a Myspace or
Facebook along with thousands of E- friends, but this not mean that you are getting anywhere due to the “noise” (interruptions in communications) caused by “everyone” doing similar projects. Some
of the most accomplished (Kardi, JB GCP, Drake, Choclair, ect) are on top of their game because of hard work and it took them longer then two years to get this far and more than just internet
appearances. The underground industry is poppin and growing; to be noticed: take calculated risk or risk being left in the dust.
