~Divine Performing Arts~
A theatrical production called Divine Performing Arts is about Chinese culture, a fine combination of new and passed traditions and
stories. Currently on a world tour the cast not only educates the audiences they entertain with beautiful dance, costumes, and music. Divine was- truly enlightening in the sense of emotion
that trigger throughout; a grand performance.
Some of the parts that stand out to me are the story telling of beliefs, the Chinese government, and traditions. Since their new government took over the Chinese are no longer
allowed to believe in their god Dafa and are prosecuted if they do so. The police were mentioned several times telling a tale of a man who was killed in front of his wife and daughter. On
a lighter note the hosts of the performance tell jokes (in both Chinese and English) while introducing the next scene. They told us that the word medicine came from the word music; music is said
to have a healing agent. Before the story of Mulan the hosts joke how Disney changed the Chinese story, which does not depict the real story- to respect your parents and to be
selfless.
The costumes were made of the best materials, sparkling, and colorful they made the dancers look like the topic of the segment such as a flower or bird. The dance was soft and full
of action (sword fighting). There was a live orchestra made up of Chinese and North American instruments. The most distinct was the piano and the erhu; they were featured in most of
the music and both had the stage for solo or duo performances. A show I will always remember.
NOTE: Divine will be in Montréal Canada next.
