Three young ladies with a passion in Alternative/ Rock music have been pushing their winning EP- Intervention to the fullest, landing them in a very good position in the underground industry. On April 24, 2009 they found themselves at the Sound Academy in Toronto to compete in a battle against 7 other bands- Search for the Next Cutting Edge Artist Finals. The winners of the competition will be playing at the Cutting Edge Festival on Aug. 1, 2, and 3rd; held by 102.1 radio station. Dame’s management promoted the event: “if there’s a Dame show to go to, this is it”. HOOKEDUPB met with- Dame the Band before doors opened at the venue to do an interview with the bright stars, and watch them take home the show, the night, and the prize. Before the show, excited and humble they talk about their past, present, and future plans:
When did Dame the Band form as a group?
Kayla*- well, Ali is new; she’s been part of the band for four months…
Katee*- Kayla and I met in grade 7… jamming on covers (System of A Down, Rammstein)
How did you all meet?
Kayla*- outside the portables… My first day at school, Katee jumped on me and said “I LOVE YOU”….
Katee*- LOL, I was so happy to see another “Alternative type” at school, everyone else was all G’d out; she was unique…I love you cause you’re unique…We found Ali through the internet (an ad for a guitarist).
How many music related awards does Dame have under their belt?
Kayla* & Katee*:
- Brampton’s Best Band (2003/13 yr olds)…at Chingacousy Park- awesome, best 8 bands.
- Toronto Independent Music Awards (TIMA), Best Alternative Rock Band and Best Song (2008)
- 2009 Brampton Arts Acclaim Award
Do you think you have an advantage or disadvantage over other bands, from being a band of young girls?
Kayla*- NO.
Katee*- …its how much passion you put in the music.
Kayla*- gender and age do not play into it at all.
Ali- commercial wise, it could be an advantage; cause guys think- three chicks- awesome…lol…and it could be negative too cause most people expect us to be pop princesses of the world today which is farthest from the truth.
Who writes the music? Is it a group thing?
Kayla*- um, it’s mostly collaborative effort. Katee brings up ideas and we help…Katee also does the base lines, melodies and lyrics.
Katee*- the EP: Intervention was a collaborative effort!
How do you feel about major labels, at the moment, in regard to getting signed?
Kayla*- um, I don’t know. It all depends on the offer that they propose; it has to make the band and the label happy.
You have a CD called INTERVENTION what are the details about that (cost, date, where)?

What can we expect from the album?
Katee*- strong independent music!
Kayla*- just good Rock music; with catchy vocals.
Has there been, or will there be, music videos to accompany the album?
Ali*- in the future we will be making tons of music videos.
I think that your amazing stage presence is one of your many talents that set you apart from the rest; does it come naturally for you?
Katee*- ya, if your feeling it (the music).
Kayla*- no mater what, we still have to do it; I have gotten in arguments with my boyfriend and had to go right on stage anyway. Nothing gets in the way of the music or the performance, that is a band rule.
Katee*- you can take your pain out in the passion of music, it feels good…awesome.
Ali*- it’s like a high! when you go a day without playing- its like- awww...
You do lots of shows, but the show tonight (Search for the Next Cutting Edge Artist Finals) may turn out to be an achievement, what are the details on that?
Kayla*- it’s our biggest show, and we’re playing at the Sound Academy.
Katee*- its fun playing with amazing bands from across Ontario, and being on a stage where so many of our favorite major artists have played in the past.
What songs are you going to perform tonight?
Katee*- Intervention, Making of the New Me, Chained to My Lace; only three songs for each band (14 min. on stage).
How many shows do you have scheduled for the coming months?
Kayla*- approx ten… Africa benefit on May 3 at the Revival and at the Rogers Spring Music Festival on May 8 in Hamilton; are a few coming up.
Ali*- we have shows like every other weekend!
Katee*- we have shows all over the place: Fergus, Ottawa…you can go to our http://www.myspace.com/dametheband it has all our shows listed there.
What is the best part of being: Dame the Band?
Kayla*- The music and the people in the band; just having fun with each other.
Katee*- meeting new people. How many other 16 and 17 year olds get to play at the Sound Academy?!
Is there anything else you would like to add/ Shout outs/ milestones?
Katee*- shout outs: Thanks to our parents they are at the top of this list; they go out of their way for us- the management team. Also, huge shout outs to Haydain Neale, and George Strombouloupoulos, we love these guys. They have helped us so much.
Kayla*- fans for support, wouldn’t be anywhere with out them
Katee*- Screaming Pete; all the Dame ladies love you...ya, and fans and friends too.
Performance Overview:
At 10:10pm the girls took the stage at the Sound Academy in the: Search to Find the Next Cutting Edge Artists Finals. Their fans made the most noise chanting: DAME, DAME, DAME until their set started, during, and after. Also, they were the only band who had fans screaming for an encore. At 11:30pm the same night, Dame was awarded winners of the show- The Next Cutting Edge Artists- another award under their belt! Hugging family and friends, jumping and running they were thrilled. DAME has the stage presence, the sound, the creativity, and devotion to take them where their musical hearts desire.
