5th Annual “Stop The Violence BBQ”
Flemingdon Park (Don Mills/ Eglinton) is a low-income community in the north end of Toronto Ontario home to multi talented groups by the name of
Random Act along with JB/ G.C.P. Mostly known for their ruthless lyrics, and leadership skills in the underground music industry of Toronto. “Stop The Violence BBQ” was held on Aug. 22, 2009 at the Flemingdon Park Plaza! Random Act & JB came together to give back and inspire their
community through an annual BBQ for the neighborhood children they started 5 years ago. Featuring: games, contests, raffles, give a ways, kids dancing, organizing community programs for the
youth, live performances, free food, and most importantly sending out a positive message for youth.
The beginning of the day focused on the children, providing them with free: music, fun, games, and food. The ‘bouncy tent’ was a hit with the smaller kids while the older ones
volunteered and played games such as “tug a war”, and football. Flemo City Media had a table set up for the youth to voice their opinions about what they would like from a new community program
sponsored by Flemo City Media within the next year. A successful program already in place is a local radio station/ studio at the Flemingdon Park Recreation Centre open to all youth in the
community- to keep them off the streets. The event started out to show love to Flemingdon Park, but now the event has grown, and it’s not only for love of a single community, but the whole city.
At the BBQ were people from all ends of Toronto (= unity).
The live performances of the latter part of the day had a mixture of Toronto’s Finest Artists from all over the city. This is when the crowds started piling in for musical
entertainment. On the playing field was: Random Act, JB, Abdullah, Wardah, Blitz, Crow, Mint, Keon Love, Navy Sealz, Donmillion, Blessed, and more. Abdullah opened the show with a
poetic a cappella. A fresh start on the music end, with the performances by Blitz, Crow, and Mint. Blessed family had an unforgettable entrance to the stage waving flags and
performing their one of a kind reggae music. Keon Love also graced the stage with her beautiful R&B songs that everyone enjoyed even the little girls who danced along to her music.
Navy Sealz had the stage to perform a couple of their tracks, a hit- “Hood Stop” and new one- “Main Squeeze” for instance! JB & Random Act members brought it big time with flawless performances and style. Everyone came right up to the
stage to show respect, take pictures/ video, and to support the men of the night. During the Random Act & JB performances give a ways (clothing from Old Navy) were thrown to the crowd.
Last but not least well known Donmillion and crew ended the live performances for the event.
To close off the night “Black Achievement” awards were announced for community members who showed leadership and hard work over the years. A reminder for the kids to stay in
school, reach for the stars, and to show confidence in them selves- was one of the last messages from Random Act and JB for the night. All and all “Stop The Violence” was a positive experience and fun time for all that attended.
This event gets bigger and better every time and its all for the youth. See you next year!
