SPOOF
Okay this column is about those ever so popular music spoof videos and remixes happening on the Internet currently. Spoof videos are
growing in popularity now but really but they’re not all that new, who can remember Weird Al Yankovic… Anyway, a spoof is like a hoax or a way to mock an artist or topic, by: redoing,
making fun of, or exaggerating the organical work of someone else’s- usually to torment a perfectly good: video, song, or artist.
Spoofs are meant to be funny for the most part (I know) but the jokes… especially with visual affects sometimes unconsciously remain in our head and influence how we react to the
original version or the artist in the future. Not to mention that the creators of the spoof videos/ songs are eating off the plates of the ones putting in the hard work. Its like they’re selling
their creativity from remaking and laughing at popular music (kinda cheep, which is a shame when some of the spoof makers have talent…yes I have laughed at the videos- BUT STILL)! The last run
inn’s I’ve had with spoof videos/ songs HAVE had effect on the way I react to the original work of another- now.
Let me just reminisce about the spoof videos/ songs I have seen as of late (you may have seen them so let me know what you think). Drake, Drake our Canadian boi… Ooh, someone
done him in good with the spoof of the video “Best I Ever Had” the remake twists the original into a poopie mess (lol). Instead of the
course going like: “you the f*ckin best, you tha f*ckin best, best I ever hadd”… it goes like this: “she’s a f*ckin mess, she’s a f*chin mess, babies got a doo-doo stain”…. While I
watched it I laughed but after I was wondering if they where making fun of him cause he’s brand new on the scene? Or maybe cause they thought the original video was lame…OR maybe the creator
knows something we don’t...did Drake have a girl wit poopie panty before?? Get it, got it- NOT a good look!
On to the next spoof song: R Kelly ft. Keri Hilson “Number One” this is one of my new favorites (it’s a Michael Jackson
tribute), so I was searching for it online and accidentally downloaded a spoof. The spoof is labeled Keri Hilson ft. R Kelly “Number One Sex” really, really disappointing I tell ‘ya this one has
R Kelly on the course like the original but the Kari Hilson part is not Kari Hilson; who ever it is singing from a mans point of view in a voice that is similar to Kari Hilson’s (a girl?)- Homo
like, very uncomfortable to say the least. Now when I hear the original I think of that other one, and for those who don’t know it’s a spoof could believe that it is the original- so NOT good…
Gender trivia has become almost a norm today lol its crazy man…Lady Gaga is the victim of a spoof video of her at one of her concerts she did. The spoof has digitally added a
male body part to the singer, it made it way over to me, and the leading question- is Lady Gaga a hermaphrodite (born with both male and female genitalia)? This had me sayin’ “no way, ya
right, OMG” for instance. Some people were saying that they loved her but now they don’t know what to think! That one was stupid man, I’m speechless!
From the examples above you notice that at first glace yes they are funny but can mess up a perfectly good video, song or artists reputation. The affects can actually last up to 4
whole years and yes that damages some of the over all revenue and becomes a PR (Public Relations) nightmare to over come the negative effects of the spoof. The point is that when I think of the
original work I unconsciously think about the spoof. On the contrary some of the spoofs are approved, according to a RollingStone article from Weird Al Yankovic (Posted July 2009).
Weird Al claims “Michael Jackson approved the spoof and said it was a funny idea”. On the most part, I say screw a spoof, and be carefull what you believe on the net!
