A Member of Notice Productions Family, Damari has been making waves in the Reggae Industry in Jamaica. Over the years more and more people gravitate to his music with excitement. He has a natural talent for conscious, fun lyrics and shows determination to reach for the stars. Doing online promotion, song downloads, with a diploma in the Jazz and Popular Music Performance Course at Edna Manley College, School of Music in Jamaica. Further, doing live performances- people want to know more about this next rising star. He’s on: youtube, myspace, facebook, the radio, and on road!! Here is an exclusive interview with Damari on: who he is, where he is going, and what he thinks…

1. Before we get started with the interview would you like to tell us a little bit about yourself? (Age, place, job, musical inspiration)

Well my full name is Kumar McCarty Bent; Y’ll know me as Damari. I’m 21 years old and I’m a Musician/Artist/songwriter.

2. Since you are so far from Toronto, Canada can you tell us what the underground music industry is like in Jamaica?

Well my first recording went into mainstream juggling, so the underground industry I have little experience, I have heard though it’s a challenging world due to lack of exposure and funding. I was lucky to have persons believe in me and privileged to have met worked with a lot of the artist and producers before I started.

3. In what ways do you think the Jamaican underground music industry differs from that in Canada or the United States?

Radio. Jamaica has few underground stations, and these stations play mainstream music, lol. In the states listening to the underground stations I hear music that I don’t hear on mainstream radio so it’s a better world for the underground artist in larger countries. Apart from that it’s the same, performances, online promotion, mix tapes, posters and the works.

4. Who are your favorite artists from each country: Jamaica, Canada, & USA? (Major or underground)

Wow, that’s a tough one, especially for Jamaica, as I’m really a big fan of most artist, and I’m really into listening to the young and Upcoming artist that are doing so well such as Romain Virgo, Chino, I-Octane and Mavado definitely, but I guess If I’m to choose I favourite artiste I’ll go with Sizzla Kalongi. For Canada, I’ll have to say Drake and for USA – Lil Wayne

5. How long have you been making music for?

Professionally for five (5) years, but really I started out playing music (Singing, drums and keyboard) at age of nine (9).

6. Have you or do you participate in public performances to promote your music- explain?

Most Definitely, Many! Every performance is promotion, plus giving back to the public is always a pleasure for me and a chance to touch someone, u may never know who is standing in the crowd.

7. It seems although some of your songs (“Time”, “Work”) are like humble lessons that you want to pass onto others to learn from; is that right?

Mos Def. I believe artistes/entertainers have the power to effect change, so since I am in the position to speak to people through my music I prefer to keep the conversations happy, conscious and clean.

8. “Time” is about friends/ acquaintances that in short are snakes; did the inspiration for this song come from a personal experience?

Yes it did. As I live, I learn and grow, in these times. Moving on though. lol

9. What kind of response do you get from your fans? (downloads, comments, radio play, online plays)

Over whelming. The comments are pouring from all over the globe, online plays are growing daily. It can only get better. Trust me, with the help of God.

10. Do you write songs before or after you hear a beat?

Both.

11. You have been promoting Work in the last month or so; do you feel it’s your best work so far?

I believe in all my songs, let’s see if the people believe that “Work” is actually the order of the day. Leave it to the people. lol

12. I think most successful musicians have an underlying message or mission to send to the world; what is yours?

Peace, Love, Unity and joy.

13. What’s next for Damari regarding your music? (Mixtapes, videos, new songs, travel) (Add approximate dates if you can)

Well, there’s a new song about to be released. The Song is called First Love. It’s a beautiful song!!! I know my fans and everybody else will love it, also the Video for it will be released shortly after. Speaking of video, also expect the medley video for the "Dream Riddim" which includes my song Work, artist like Ras Penco, Richie Spice, Kush, Ding Dong, Bugle, Jah cur; Produced by: Unga Notice. 14. How do you feel about the situation in Haiti right now?
