“It’s Now or Never” got old, and now he on: “The New Run”
Interview:
Jaydahmann
Toronto artist Jaydahmann is on a large platform doing tons of work with many well-known hip hop artists currently and in the past. Most up ‘n coming artist first goals are to get on radio weather it be Internet or airwaves; he has been in the number one spot on different sites, stations and networks. Now moving on to the next one he is wants to gain more recognition in the Toronto scene by putting out well put together material. This is the kind of guy younger dudes just getting started in the rap game should look up to for guidance. Spreading the positive side of this industry and helping others learn from his mistakes encountered along his journey. He had it all going for him and it came to an erupt stop due to personal issues, and has come back to take his place in the industry as a renewed person. He took time out of his busy day meet up with HOOKEDUPB for an interview:
You are an extremely busy guy doing: performances, mixtapes, and events; how do you keep up with it all?
Basically, um, time management! First and for most- there has to be a passion, if there isn’t then you’re not going to able to keep up. There are 24 hours in a day- you gotta utilize every one.
Name some of the things you have done that boosted your career as a rapper?
Connecting with well-known artists in the city is always good. Creating music coming from my heart- ‘cause they can sense that you're real and not just a gimmick! I would say that my products (mixtapes) and natural talent are very well received and above average- swaggaa (ya)!
Have any of your tracks been on any underground count down lists or played on the radio?
Many, about.. Um.. A lot of collabos on different radio, Internet radio and hip hop sites, maybe 12 that I know of over the course of four years. I can't even listen to everything, there’s a lot of stations you know! Beats from the streets, Flow 93.5, WBLK, CHRY 105.5, 89.5…the Internet ones: Fusion, CHAMP, and others…the list goes onnn!
If you had a chance to open for your favorite-signed artists who would it be?
Hmm, I never thought about that before I always think about headlining my own shows. I think that thinking "Big" fills the drive in you! It would probably be 50 Cent. There’s just something about 50. I speak about 50 in my songs; we had the same up-bringing; a house full of kids, no food in the house. We relate on so many levels. I also love the way he conducts his business and supports his artists. That would be the artist, 50 Cent!
Do you think it is wise for underground artists to expand with merchandising?
Definitely, because as you know in the music game there isn’t any money right now. Funds aren’t what they used to be, a lot of them (artists) aren’t educated- so you can’t just focus on the music, merchandising comes with it, a branding! You have to brand yourself because executives now a days are signing artists to what I believe is called a ‘360 deal’ where they take a piece of everything- tours, merchandising, ringtones, everything!
Can you leak some info on your next plans (videos, shows, callabs, voting)?
We got a major video shoot coming up. Were gonna do the shoot at the end of May, we hope to have a lot of support from the city. Working on an EP, maybe, it might be an album, and it could take about a year ‘cause management wants everything to be perfect. Lots of visuals for you- it’s going to be a hot summer!!
I’m liking your album cover, do you thinks it’s important to have an “A Game” cover to standout?
Yes! Your album cover presentation is key, if its whack- we ain’t picking that up!! It has to stand out. When you see my cover it’s coming out at you, I’m coming out of my skin breaking away from the old me into the new me. It has to be compelling, it has to signify something- and that’s the true meaning of art. I have one of the best Graphic Designers- he’s always really deep.
How do you feel about the artists that have made it big out of Toronto- Drake, kardinal Offishall?
I’ll start with Kardinal- he has the hustle embedded in him it’s always been in him. He wasn’t always the go to man really, people at the time thought that it was going to be Choclair I heard people say that if anyone was going to blow it was going to be Choclair. Kardi kept his roots close to the Jamaican background. The lane that he’s in- opened the doors for me. We share some similarities too, he mixes it up with a patois, I mix it up a lot. If he didn’t, I wouldn’t have it like that! I’m thankful for that!
Drizzy- Drake- that dude just kicked the door wide open! As well there’s things that he does that that I do. He speaks with a lot of intellect, I do that also. He does story telling, I do that too. I thought I was the only one doing that!
With everything you do there’s competition, I took it as a challenge too. It made me step up my game and stand on my own two. Not going to knock anyone! He’s number 1, people think it’s because his people have money- it helps, but can’t knock him! His uncle has connections; growing up in the hood there’s no handouts. I’m glad that Toronto showed him the way. I can respect that ‘cause he’s good people. People are now looking at Toronto and I thank him for that, and he shows respect for other Toronto artists too. Drake- “Replacement Girl” was when he was on his way, at that time I remember vividly, he had gave shout outs to about 15 Toronto artists on his Myspace page, I was one of them - he’s good peoples.
People can download “The New Run” Mixtape at: http://www.jaydahmann.com/ , can u sum up the ‘tape for us?
Signifies my new journey, signifies renewed life. Um, so I don’t know if you watched the promo video I said I’m done with the new ways of doing things and went back to the old ways of doing things. Went back to the roots- where honour meant something- trust! I’ve been betrayed (in a significant way), I was left for dead! It renewed my faith in God, that’s where I gather my strength. I decided to put my hand out for help and my real dogs like Breezy answered. You can’t let pride get in your way, you will die alone and your life will be unfulfilling if you have too much pride. My peoples around me now see the vision and are willing to do what it takes to see my vision come to life. During my last outing and what I mean by that is my last mixtape: “It’s Now Or Never”, it was me but there was a lot of influence around, you can hear it in the music. There are certain things I don’t want to glorify. To create this new mixtape I took the same process I used when I was creating “Am I My Brother’s Keeper” it was just me and the music, no unwanted influences. No girls, no friends around, just me. Me and the experiences of these two eyes and because it’s renewed, instead of going left I’m going right, you know what I mean!? “The New Run” is new life, me breaking out of my shell. I don’t have much time left the hustle is on!
