Something New- Boondock Saints [Interview]

Boondock Saints is a group of ten guys with a love for making music, working hard, and having a good time in between. They are a newly formed group of experienced musicians from different genre backgrounds that make a unique sound by intertwining their styles. Turning the standard concept of a hip-hop crew inside out, this loose congregation of ten Artists, The Boondock Saints where designed to overtake the record industry in as profitable a fashion as possible. The main genres that you will notice in their music are: Hip Hop old/new, Blues, Funk, Rock w/ live band, plus Country! Since they have past experience apart from the group making music; the Boondock Saints quality is well done, and the lyrics stay on topic. You can here new music from Brian & Wolfy (Hip Hop) on the Boondock Saints Reverbnation account (link listed at bottom). HOOKEDUPB met up with five of the Boondock Saints members: Brian (Manager), Eh K Eh, Link The Bar Fly, Dyme$, and Wolfy (plus the brought their photographer came along too) for an interview. Each member answered a question below to tell us about the Boondock Saints, and their coming projects:

Can you tell us how you all got together to make music as a team?

*BRIAN- Basically it was a “brain child” type of idea that expanded; an estimated three groups into one basic group with the same idea or view! We have four members from Toronto, two members from Mississauga, two members from Halton Region, and two members from Hamilton- we came together under boondocks Saints team.

What “unique” aspect do the Boondock Saints offer?

*EH K EH- It’s an old school feel with updated touch- it’s all in house- no guests. It’s B-Boy, lyricism, and rowdiness- it’s an all-star team! We have all been making music for years we’re veterans now we are coming together with something in common.

Does your name Boondock Saints reflect the group’s own perceived character as “Rowdy Irish Hooligans” or does the name come from the movie?

*LINK- I don’t think it comes from the movie; it comes from 1993 times (in Hip Hop). When House of Pain came out…Beastie Boys leaders of the new school, Wu- Tang Clan, and yeah-Vanilla Ice came out too. Vanilla Ice ruined it for us (lol)…House of Pain was the ones who kicked the door down, I don’t know how to say this- I don’t know- made “whiteness” okay in Hip Hop! Than there was EMINEM

We look at it with a Wu-Tang view- and a House of Pain feel, yet we are all professionals, and performers first, but second we like to party, and get rowdy, and cause ruckus.

When is your debut album expected to drop?

*DYME$- At the end of the summer (2011); Expect a lot of lyrical fire old school to new school with five different characters on the mic. We will be unleashing a particular brand of strength, guts, and talent. Giving you a taste of real street life with a life of real reality twist, that will leave a bitter sweet taste of OMG in your mouth.

Can you tell us about some of the details of the album?

*WOLFY- Just realness. We gonna bring Hip Hop to its original roots with a new style- five people put it all together, and make something happen. Five lyrical assassins, a gangster point of view, Literal lifestyles is what we give you while staying dedicated to the true essence of rap music: original lyrics and strong beat-savvy productions.

What are some of the criteria the group wanted for the album before the release?

*EH K EH- Well everybody is established artist- so a callabo of five different established/ experienced…we don’t have criteria, we’ve been doing this for years separately we’re just coming together to do something new and fresh; we just focus on lyrics of the song, quality- best possible, it’s all in house from five different views! With a canvas beats provided by a group of gifted Beat Producers we look to expand the limits of harsh-sounding, neck-snapping hip-hop by adding a melodic element, with a well respected twist of radio rap/rock friendly songs...

Are you planning on doing a music video, or performances in the near future?

*DYME$- There is a potential tour with Whitefang and Brooklyn Bangers 12- 15 cities. Two of the best tracks off the album will be turned into videos- its up to the fans to decide which ones they like best!

What track did the group/artist have on the count down at Unsigned Hype WBLK 93.7 (Buffalo) in May 2011?

*LINK- Boondock Saints- Poncho & Lefty! We got a beat, he (EH K EH) did the initial verse, and I mimicked his style. Its also a remake of Murl Hagger & Willy Nelson; a lot more music will be coming from us sounding like these guys- a Country/Hip Hop sound.

Do you guys do all the production yourselves or do you outsource it?

*BRIAN-  it is an in house thing we all work on finding the best beats ourselves than take it to put it all together- it (producer) could be Casper, Zing Beatz, Jinx Beatz, Dego Brown Productions, or Rinzai Productions, When it comes to beats we are going to outsource them from the Hip Hop community in the UK/CANADA

Any last comments, or shout outs?

*BRIAN- Shout out to the other Boondock Saints members who couldn’t show up today: J- to the mutha fucking T, Anda- Z, Zing Beats (The Funk Technicians), Lil Lenn, Scam Dolla, And Yin Yan The Unknown Assassin.

*EH K EH- All the Real Rappers, and hardcore rockers still left out there, and the new kids sticking to the rules! Boondock Saints Baby!,

*LINK- New Breed, Link, Macceo, Caspar  Shank Street Social (EHKEH’s Band)

*WOLFY- To my street fam SKULL GANG, and the Stinson. Street. Boyz

*DYME$- My Moms, my Lady, Kids, Murkz, Rilla, Sheldon, Disciple and the Jawbone Records Crew
