SPOOF

Okay this column is about those ever so popular music spoof videos and remixes happening on the Internet currently. Spoof videos are growing in popularity now but really but they’re not all that new, who can remember Weird Al Yankovic… Anyway, a spoof is like a hoax or a way to mock an artist or topic, by: redoing, making fun of, or exaggerating the organical work of someone else’s- usually to torment a perfectly good: video, song, or artist.

Spoofs are meant to be funny for the most part (I know) but the jokes… especially with visual affects sometimes unconsciously remain in our head and influence how we react to the original version or the artist in the future. Not to mention that the creators of the spoof videos/ songs are eating off the plates of the ones putting in the hard work. Its like they’re selling their creativity from remaking and laughing at popular music (kinda cheep, which is a shame when some of the spoof makers have talent…yes I have laughed at the videos- BUT STILL)! The last run inn’s I’ve had with spoof videos/ songs HAVE had effect on the way I react to the original work of another- now.

Let me just reminisce about the spoof videos/ songs I have seen as of late (you may have seen them so let me know what you think). Drake, Drake our Canadian boi… Ooh, someone done him in good with the spoof of the video “Best I Ever Had” the remake twists the original into a poopie mess (lol). Instead of the course going like: “you the f*ckin best, you tha f*ckin best, best I ever hadd”… it goes like this: “she’s a f*ckin mess, she’s a f*chin mess, babies got a doo-doo stain”…. While I watched it I laughed but after I was wondering if they where making fun of him cause he’s brand new on the scene? Or maybe cause they thought the original video was lame…OR maybe the creator knows something we don’t...did Drake have a girl wit poopie panty before?? Get it, got it- NOT a good look!

On to the next spoof song: R Kelly ft. Keri HilsonNumber One” this is one of my new favorites (it’s a Michael Jackson tribute), so I was searching for it online and accidentally downloaded a spoof. The spoof is labeled Keri Hilson ft. R Kelly “Number One Sex” really, really disappointing I tell ‘ya this one has R Kelly on the course like the original but the Kari Hilson part is not Kari Hilson; who ever it is singing from a mans point of view in a voice that is similar to Kari Hilson’s (a girl?)- Homo like, very uncomfortable to say the least. Now when I hear the original I think of that other one, and for those who don’t know it’s a spoof could believe that it is the original- so NOT good…

Gender trivia has become almost a norm today lol its crazy man…Lady Gaga is the victim of a spoof video of her at one of her concerts she did. The spoof has digitally added a male body part to the singer, it made it way over to me, and the leading question- is Lady Gaga a hermaphrodite (born with both male and female genitalia)? This had me sayin’ “no way, ya right, OMG” for instance. Some people were saying that they loved her but now they don’t know what to think! That one was stupid man, I’m speechless!

From the examples above you notice that at first glace yes they are funny but can mess up a perfectly good video, song or artists reputation. The affects can actually last up to 4 whole years and yes that damages some of the over all revenue and becomes a PR (Public Relations) nightmare to over come the negative effects of the spoof. The point is that when I think of the original work I unconsciously think about the spoof. On the contrary some of the spoofs are approved, according to a RollingStone article from Weird Al Yankovic (Posted July 2009). Weird Al claims “Michael Jackson approved the spoof and said it was a funny idea”. On the most part, I say screw a spoof, and be carefull what you believe on the net!

5th Annual “Stop The Violence BBQ”

Flemingdon Park (Don Mills/ Eglinton) is a low-income community in the north end of Toronto Ontario home to multi talented groups by the name of Random Act along with JB/ G.C.P. Mostly known for their ruthless lyrics, and leadership skills in the underground music industry of Toronto. “Stop The Violence BBQ” was held on Aug. 22, 2009 at the Flemingdon Park Plaza! Random Act & JB came together to give back and inspire their community through an annual BBQ for the neighborhood children they started 5 years ago. Featuring: games, contests, raffles, give a ways, kids dancing, organizing community programs for the youth, live performances, free food, and most importantly sending out a positive message for youth.

The beginning of the day focused on the children, providing them with free: music, fun, games, and food. The ‘bouncy tent’ was a hit with the smaller kids while the older ones volunteered and played games such as “tug a war”, and football. Flemo City Media had a table set up for the youth to voice their opinions about what they would like from a new community program sponsored by Flemo City Media within the next year. A successful program already in place is a local radio station/ studio at the Flemingdon Park Recreation Centre open to all youth in the community- to keep them off the streets. The event started out to show love to Flemingdon Park, but now the event has grown, and it’s not only for love of a single community, but the whole city. At the BBQ were people from all ends of Toronto (= unity).

The live performances of the latter part of the day had a mixture of Toronto’s Finest Artists from all over the city. This is when the crowds started piling in for musical entertainment. On the playing field was: Random Act, JB, Abdullah, Wardah, Blitz, Crow, Mint, Keon Love, Navy Sealz, Donmillion, Blessed, and more. Abdullah opened the show with a poetic a cappella. A fresh start on the music end, with the performances by Blitz, Crow, and Mint. Blessed family had an unforgettable entrance to the stage waving flags and performing their one of a kind reggae music. Keon Love also graced the stage with her beautiful R&B songs that everyone enjoyed even the little girls who danced along to her music. Navy Sealz had the stage to perform a couple of their tracks, a hit- “Hood Stop” and new one- “Main Squeeze” for instance! JB & Random Act members brought it big time with flawless performances and style. Everyone came right up to the stage to show respect, take pictures/ video, and to support the men of the night. During the Random Act & JB performances give a ways (clothing from Old Navy) were thrown to the crowd. Last but not least well known Donmillion and crew ended the live performances for the event.

To close off the night “Black Achievement” awards were announced for community members who showed leadership and hard work over the years. A reminder for the kids to stay in school, reach for the stars, and to show confidence in them selves- was one of the last messages from Random Act and JB for the night. All and all “Stop The Violence” was a positive experience and fun time for all that attended.

This event gets bigger and better every time and its all for the youth. See you next year!

EMINEM- The Man Of The Hour
Column by: HOOKEDUPB

EMINEM has released a new album called Relapse (2009) and has not let us down in showing his bold and extreme ways of expression. He has a way of creating a picture of his lyrics/ feelings and has the confidence to bring ideas that push peoples comfort zones. This has not guided him wrong regarding his success the Hip Hop industry. Weather you love it, or hate it, you heard about it! Possibly making him the man of the hour.

Since EMINEM’s fan hype over of the “Crake a Bottle” track, every time I turn around another one of his tracks is the talk of the town. There is “3am In The Morning"- INSANE, “Beautiful”- INSPIRERING, and “We Made You”- EGOTISTIC. Although what triggered this column is his release of “The Warning” from EMINEM- a response to Mariah Carey’s song and music video “Obsessed”.

EMINEM has been known for his negative lyrics about those close to him so one shouldn’t be shocked at “The Warning” if you think about it. Mariah Carey’s “Obsessed” was good but possibly full of lies! Lies that would most likely make anyone upset and EMINEM went straight to the studio to retaliate. Results: “The Warning” an “honestly” thorough came back, and in my opinion crushed “Obsessed” by adding Mariah’s voice at the end the track exposing her “lies”. We will see how it all works out in the end- ‘cause you never know...

Don’t get me wrong I like Mariah Carey’s music and wish her the best in her career but she may have been asking for “trouble”. On the same note EM’ got pretty upset at the guy with the goatee in Mariah’s video mean while he makes “fun” of all kinds of celebrities in his videos (“We Made You”). Regardless, from fan response EMINEM is on a steady pace of success with his new album Relapse.
