DARK DAYS, Vol. 1- Mixtape Review

DARK DAYS brought to you from Scar Town- lyrical G’s- B.L.A.C.K C.I.T.Y aims to express, the crews: views, norms, and values to the city. “Nippy in the North” or just “Slug”is the underlying message usually accompanied by the reason why. These guys and gyals are real, wise and even fun showing their unique personalities throughout the album. 19 quality trackz; if you can’t relate to this album, you aint GANGsta!

Welcome to heavy beatz and dark perspectives… Make A Stack- ft. Kurse Dre, Rook$ 9mm, and Dre Specz; “First you get the money, than you get the power”…ending wit: “call me what you wanna call me, we something like a army”. BIG tune, Scarborough Boyz- with a “BAAD” echoing course, gets you to bounce your head along with: Kurse Dre, Ras Thug, Droops, and Bishop Brigante! Gossip- “he said, she said”…in background, I think you can hear, a life line- beep beep beep; from Droops, Kurse Dre, and Risky G. More- has a gyal by the name Mood Swing who throw’s in a hard female vibe that signifies that she representing- “all up in this bitch”, Jizzo, Scamz Droopy, and Camoflauge kill their verses in this one too. There are other tracks of this caliber on the mixtape, along with ones that bring it down a clip.

Mixing in that fun nature, See Me- has a serious introduction followed by a “ryder” beat; they fly, they got bling… “When bitchez see me, they can’t stop stair ‘inn” featuring: Ras Thug, Kurse Dre, and Droops. They don’t only want money, in Make You Cum- with Kurse Dre, Krooks, Risky G, Droops, and Scamz; they show a provocative side for mendem who like to get hard ‘n wet. Changing it up a little, Chicken And Wedges- from Rook$ 9mm, Scamz, and Drops, speak about pickin’ up girls, and how they will treat them better than their man (watch out). Lastly, We Ride- featuring: Kurse Dre, Droops, Ras Thug and Danielle Ray, tell us how they ride- “blaze’ in piff”…

Definitely a hardcore hip hop mixtape setting the standards for: gangsta swag, using freedom of speech, and bringing together a group of talented people with a message that counts. Look for your copy of DARK DAYS, and bounce to this, when you, on your grind!

~SCRATCH CAT~ 

*RECORDED* INTERVIEW 

Scratch Cat, a professional beat boxer from right here in Toronto plans to release his album Scratch Fu soon. Something that has never been done before; all sounds done by beat boxing (layered), featuring some new and known MC’s. The theme is Kung Fu influenced by a love for Kung Fu and the Wu-Tang Clan. He has taught many people things about music and beat boxing in the past, currently showing youth in his community positive expression through beat boxing. Scratch Cat and his manager Bernard came to HOOKEDUPB’s kitchen with their recording equipment, to give us a taste of his style and sound. Check it out; he does some pretty cool “bits” during the interview:

Talent is a young aspiring rapper/ producer that has just recently entered the industry and has been making a lot of smart moves to get ahead. It takes confidence and determination to survive in this industry; and that he has. Continue reading and find out how far he goes…

1.When did you start rapping?
Been writing & listening to Hip-Hop since I was 12, but I Started takin it serious 3 years ago, music is my life.

2.How old are you now?
I’m 20 now, time flies... (laughs)

3.Who is in your crew?
The crews I am a part of are:

4.What are the next milestones for you as an “Up ‘N Coming” artist?
->Dropping two CD’s this year ( EP & Full Length)
->Shooting my first High Quality video (Love Story Prt 1)
->Grimey Barz TV

5.How long have you been coming back and forth from Orangeville to Toronto to compete in battles and network?
I haven’t always lived in Orangeville…but I do now, I was born in Sauga City…Im in Toronto & Missisauga every weekend or at least twice a week.

6.Why did you start doing the K.O.T.D battles?
I’ve known Organik from time, and I wanted to get involved..and broaden my horizon in the Hip-hop game...Also its Canada's Premier Battle League, very big movement an' definetly a good look for Canadian Hip-Hop. My 1st battle was against Diaz, But I Lost That Unfortunetly. Diaz came hard though... He's a great dude too.
I'll be doin' lots more battles in the near future too, so look out for those.

7.At the K.O.T.D- Prove Yourself Edition, you didn’t get to battle because of a “no-show” contender, how to do interpret that?
Actually I have lots of mixed feeling about that (laughs)…because I battled him a year and a half ago and I lost! And um, he never showed up this time.. So for him not to show up really boggles my mind, Cuz he beat me last time, so in his mind right now he thinks hes better then me (which is 100% untrue..laughs). I stood and watched the door the whole time waiting for him to come, an' he never came, I couldnt even enjoy myself..Cause I was waitin for him to show up the whole time.. C'mon Rooks ..(laughs)

8.How often are you in studio?
At least 4 times a week, I got 2 CDs in the works right now So it's taking up all my free time with writing & recording... Promotion... Ect.

9.You have done some “Vlogging” on the internet, has that brought you more or less attention in this industry?
Ya, Grimey Barz (On: Youtube) Brings ALOT Of Attention, one of the biggest Canadian artist showcase channels.

10.What is your definition of Hip Hop?
Its a culture, lifestyle... like Royce Da 5'9 said: "Hip-Hop is everything around you"

11.You have a new EP coming out called “Recession” what can we expect from that?
->Really deep Concepts an' songs, different from what I normally write & record
->It’s all exclusively produced by: Young K
->It’s a EP so there will only be about 8- 9 tracks
->in the summer you will see the video for “Love Story”, Pt. 1

12.The track: “Love Story” Pt. 1 is obviously about a certain “heart breaker” was this track easy or hard to write and put out for the rest of the world to hear?
Lol, actually It Wasnt Hard To Write... Stuff from the heart usually isn't, just flows out the pen.
I was just home alone this past Valentines Day; thinking about all the bad stories. So I wrote it.

13.Who do you make music for?
->Fans, Family, friends & to get outta the struggle of everyday life...
->I just do it for the love of it; writing, producing and mixing tracks, maybe one day I'll make some cash of It...(Laughs)
