Shawtee RE- 1st Lady of Da Game

Interviewee: Shawtee RE

It’s hard for female artists to succeed in Hip Hop industry, as there are very few even in the mainstream never mind underground scene. Shawtee RE is the first female rapper I have interviewed in two years; I mean that alone speaks for its self! Shawtee RE is an artist from Calgary Canada and calls herself “1st Lady of Da Game”; She has her own gangsta sound and stays confident in this dog eat dog industry. Shawtee RE tracks: “Bad Bitch”, “G Like Me”, “Rydin On My Coattailz”, and “I Aint Stoppin” are provocative, fun, and serious- taboot. She has been running her own label called “1st Lady Entertainment”, and recently obtained management with “7 figure Entertainment” in Miami USA. Her manager from 7 Figure Entertainment also has hosted a radio show called “The Street Corner” that plays Hip Hop, and it will be playing Shawtee RE’s tracks soon! She is ready to take the Hip Hop world by surprise. HOOKEDUPB puts her in the top four female rappers in Canada for her talent, uniqueness and drive. Shawtee Re was actually a recommendation for a feature in the mag! Once I heard her music I thought: I better get her on the phone for an interview… Once I did, we talked about her upcoming projects of course, but one answer that stands out and is highly respected was regarding Nicki Minaj and Lil Kim, take a look:

How did you get into or interested in the Rap game?

Well I’ve been rapping since I was on the yellow school bus, but really when I was 14 years old when I started writing my own tracks. I hung around many rappers, producers…everyone raps, I was jealous of all my homeboys and said this is where I wanna be- for real! So I was 14.

You have hosted the Street Corner Radio show in Aug. 2010; can you tell us about that experience?

Ah, actually it’s my manager: Redbeard (7 Figure Entertainment) that hosted that show. The radio show is Monday- Friday 8-10pm eastern time.

My music will be playing on there soon, so…

As a female artist do you feel it’s hard to be accepted and respected by other male rappers?

No, not at all actually! Honestly it’s how you look at it if your confident people are confident in you too. I haven’t had any problems really. If anything, I think I get more respect ‘cause I can do the same thing they can do!

You and Bobby Franchise are affiliated, will there be collaboration from you two in the future?

Oh for real that’s my home boy we met a few years ago, so he asked me to be on his mixtape and he will be on a few of mine also.

“Rydin On My Coattailz” is my fave track from you, which one is yours and why?

Oh ya, I like to hear that…I love “Rydin On My Coattailz” it’s going to be on the radio soon!

3Sum” is a track I’m about to release. It’s a track I’m excited for, it’s a lot different than the other tracks that I have.

Can you give us the low down about what you think about the Nicki Minaj and Lil Kim situation?

Well I can’t speak for other people, but all I can say is that I have nothing but respect for people doing their thing no matter who you are!

What is your main focus at the moment: performances, new releases, networking, or studio time?

Everything, we do everything, I was in the studio today! Radio, performances, it’s getting hectic, but- its so worth it!

What’s next for Shawtee RE?

Um, my pre- album is coming out- “Riding on My Coattailz”. My mixtape is coming out hosted by G-Unit/ Shadyville DJ. The album will be coming out after that; I’m not releasing the name yet- its secret!

Interviewee: BEANPIE COMIC

Written by: Shaun Bolden & Illustrated by: Dino Diaz

An independently created and published comic by two talented men Shaun Bolden, writer & Dino Diaz, illustrator have distributed this underground read circulating the urban streets of Toronto.  After shows of persistence and hard work people are starting to take notice of their 44-paged BEANPIE Comic Issue #1. Shaun and Dino are passionate about what they do and are working on making it successful brand on a larger scale. They have been promoting BEANPIE for two years going to events such as: Beats, Breaks, and Culture, Caribana, Comic Conventions, Internet EST. The master plan is to make BEANPIE Comic Issue #1 continuation a graphical novel Called: Beanpie The Bootleg Hustler, which will be released December 2010. Here is a short outline of the comic:

BEANPIE is about- a Yale University drop out, named Beanpie (main character), who had to take care of his little brother once their parents passed away. After working a “good” job Beanpie decided he wanted to start his own venture independently. Taking a leap of faith he goes for what he wants!

The story has funny parts, it has serious parts, and it appealing to the eyes, easy to read, and it’s new! The four main characters are relatable- they are everyday people, living their lives; maybe you know someone like them, or maybe they remind you of yourself in a similar situation. People say that the comic industry is a dying trade; one read of BEANPIE would change your mind! Read what Shaun & Dino have to say in their first interview ever with HOOKEDUPB:

How did BEANPIE get started?

Shaun Bolden- Um, it’s originally from/ started in Connecticut (USA) and I joined up with my cousin Kris in the year 2000. It was a home video about a drug dealer, he (my cousin) made a video, a video named: BEANPIE. It was hilarious, because he used a British accent; he wasn’t British so his accent sucked (lol), and he was really funny! So I thought it would be great to make it a Youtube skit. I obviously didn’t want him to be a drug dealer (cause I have kids you know, and don’t want them picking up that and thinking my Dad writes that..) so I changed the character to a regular hustler.

But then I moved to Toronto Canada, so you know I had the script of the first chapter but it was never going to be shot on Youtube so I read it for my wife and she urged me to keep going. So I started posting stories online and people loved it! I started with stories with- out picture but it’s hard to get people to read with out pictures so we decided to make a comic book and searched for artists to draw the pictures for us and we found Dino! Actually he was working at a store my wife frequented, and I added him on Facebook. I saw that he had drawings up (on Facebook) they were good! So I asked my wife if we should ask him to draw for us, and now we have a comic! We are like a family now and we made it together so neither of us feel like either person is better or more important than the other.

Do you have something in common with the characters in the comic (ie. BEANPIE & Ice Juicy), I noticed the character kinda look like the both of you?

Dino Diaz- Lol…

Shaun- Ya, Shaun (Ice Juicy) is actually me. Everybody on our team is a character- my wife is Lisa (BEANPIE’S girlfriend).

Dino- I was graphic designer at the time, and it was failed project after failed project; I know its kinda cliché but I was just doing it to get by. I know how it feels being in a struggle and everyone is doubting you- in every aspect it was a real story! I could relate to the character too because I was going through a similar situation. Doing your thing and there’s a girl…

Is the storyline based on a true story, if not where did the story line come from?

Shaun- The Youtube skit was originally suppose to be silly but when I came here I continued on with writing stories. I’m into Japanese anime so it’s deeper than the regular comic or cartoon that’s out. After the first chapter that’s how it was formed and gained direction and gained success; it will be a graphical novel, it comes out in December 2010! The story shifts by the fifth chapter and gets outrageous- ‘cause it’s a comic book…and I can.

Dino- It becomes less hamburger and more steak! Silly funny.

There is a lot of use of British “wording” used in the comic (mate, bugger est.), where is the story located?

Shaun- He has a terrible British accent! I’ve written side stories for fun, when it gets animated you can tell; it’s in Connecticut- New England (LOL).

Can you tell us who the “target market” is for BEANPIE comics?

Shaun- We’ve been trying to figure that out that out cause everyone can read it…Caribana on the Harbourfront, there was this kid, he was 10- 12 years old he read it and came back and he was coughing and wheezing

Dino- He was excited. We love kids reactions- their so pure- He said its an awesome story, and he told us that he wanted to write his own books, we saw this kid as a mini version of us! It’s a dying trade…but he sees the product like this- read the story not just pictures he could feel it!

Shaun- We also have people in their 50/ 60’s and type of life experience. The new story I will have to change all the “tongue and tooth” jokes out. We love the kid, was want to teach ‘em early, let them know so they can lead the way.

I know Rappers, musicians in Toronto, and we promote to them too, and they like it!   Nobody else is really doing this (comic & graphic novel) in that industry so we’re the only ones, and it’s good!

Is the comic meant to inspire the reader (re: message)?

Shaun- It was meant to make the reader laugh originally, but then we changed the story and I can see how people could be inspired to do what they want to in life. Doing an independent project is hard with everyone telling you can’t do it and stuff like that, but if you have the passion and keep at it, you can do it!

Dino- Once we started getting attention and success…it gives me the chills when people say that to me/ us; its like getting a gold star when your good at school, or when its your birthday as a kid and you ask for a He-Man toy and everyone gets you a He-Man toy but one friend gets you that special edition He-Man and it feels good!

Shaun- Ya

You have a full product line of BEANPIE (comics, hats, shirts, pens, pins) can you give us any information on where to purchase these?

Shaun- e-Bay, our store, we do certain events for women, we only made a few panties- about five! But it’s really about getting the story out. We walked around taking pictures with the BEANPIE t-shirt before the comic was even out yet… to create a buzz. Ya, my brother and cousin took pictures with the t-shirt- it was about getting the story out, not about getting the money (t-shirt sales).  We got about 300 people holding the T-Shirts for us! It’s not about the clothing; just want people to know the story.

Our prices are good too, because you get the comic, pen, and pin- as a package.

Archie comic books were my personal favorite growing up, what were yours?

Shaun- Your not gonna like my answer… I didn’t start to read comic books…I hated reading, it wasn’t ‘till I san Japanese Anime that really got me! One of my favorites is: Gantz!

Dino- I was really into Spiderman, again I could relate to Spiderman ‘cause he was just a regular kid, with a cool costume. My Mom used to say if I was good the whole week she would buy me comic books at the end of the week. I never wanted to wait till the next week to see what happens in my favorite TV shows so I would write my own endings- just wrote the stories. I didn’t get into animation ‘till later. Drawing started with my fascination with graffiti- but definitely Spiderman.

I really enjoyed issue #1; when will the Graphical novel “Beanpie The Bootleg Hustler” be released to the public?

Shaun- The graphic novel releases in December 2010.

Dino- We will be at the comic convention at the Toronto Metro Convention Centre this year, and other book signings.

Shout outs/ last comments?

Shaun- Team BEANPIE for sure!

-Urbanology- we were on Onyx Barbershop,

10 Questions with Leonardo Carmichael, Special Feature

Interviewers: HOOKEDUPB & FUTURE WORLD FAMILY PROMOTIONS

Interviewee: Leonardo Carmichael

Leonardo Carmichael is a performing artist in Portmore Jamaica; who has been working hard to keep up his steady pace of catchy music for everyone to enjoy. Growing up music was always a part o his life, Leonardo went to, and graduated from Edna Manley Music School of Jamaica. While he was there he met, now, good friend and supporter: Nastassja ‘Nazy’ Hammond (Beres Hammond’s daughter), and has since collaborated on each other’s singles. I think his R&B style coupled with his Jazzy lyrics, Reggae beats, and consistency makes him stand out! He has over 20 Youtube uploads and numerous hit singles under his belt.

He writes his own original music, and he also performs covers to other artist’s music to gain attention to his wide variety of talents. From his 2009 release of his original song “If only for a Little Time” that is still being talked about in summer 2010, to his current song “I Do” (Feel Like Dancing); Leonardo is definitely making waves. He doesn’t want to waste any time promoting his music at home and abroad. Here is an exclusive interview with Leonardo Carmichael, brought to you by HOOKEDUPB and FUTURE WORLD FAMILY PROMOTIONS:

Tell us one of your earliest memories of music that always stands out to you?

Taking My grand mother’s pots, their covers, paint containers and buckets to make a drum set when I was 5 or 6, always singing some melody, beat boxing and staring intently at musicians in church as a child.

You graduated from Edna Manley Music School of Jamaica; what program(s) did you take during the time that you spent there?

I graduated with a Diploma in Music Studies (Jazz and Pop), my principal instruments being: Voice and Drum Kit

It is said that you: “want to perform music that changes every world”- what changes are you focused on?

Creating a dynamic, menu of grooves and tunes from Jamaican roots that draw from several genres but stay true to Reggae, Dance Hall and like Jamaican forms, with a message that speaks to anyone regardless of their contexts and has a positive, edifying, entertaining and inspiring message. My music must be trend setting in message and in form, that is Leonardo Carmichael! We strive to make it the best and we are going nowhere but up with brand Carmichael.

Your song “If Only for a Little Time” was a hit last year and continues to get attention now, how does that feel as a performer to make music the people enjoy?

I can’t explain it, it’s likeseeing something priceless to you appreciated and respected…it’s beautiful. Makes me wana write a billion songs.

Your new song “I Do” (Feel Like Dancing) is a really nice song for the lovers and the ladies, is it or can it be played on the radio in Jamaica?

It is very well accepted by ladies in fact they often tell me its there favorite and it is being played a lot by Disc Jockies on the stations.

You do all kinds of covers to songs and even a mixture of genres, what artist’s music do you enjoy performing the most, and why?

I think it’s far more than just the artiste. It is the substance lyrically as well as the composition of the song and for that reason I find it very hard to chose one. Ironically one of the artistes I respect the most: Musiq Soulchild, I do not perform his song the most. However, I think he is one of the most lyrically potent song writers and recording artiste of our times…like WoW! With songs like: Until, Someone, Just Friends, Don’t Change, Who Knows, Teach Me, If You Leave, 143, Love, Half Crazy and Deserve You More…. I know he deserves 11 Gramy’s but have never gotten even one save for nominations!

You have experience playing the drums in a band, and also performing songs in front of the mic in the spot light-what are the differences in the energy you give/ get regarding the two?

When I drum as an artiste I perform like it’s the last chance I’ll ever get. When I drum for an artiste I temper that energy relative to my band leader or performer, or I just take the lead and bring it! However, when I am singing that stage has gotta be like a throne where I offer my best ‘sacrifice.’ I sing like it’s my last, I connect I mean every word, I perform, I pour into my audience. And they must be satisfied. I give my best even if it’s just a soft simple melody.

Do you have any live performances lined up for the near future?

I have a couple shows lined up for the country’s north coast and within Kingston just stay tuned especially to my facebook events page and you’ll get everything.

What can we expect from Leonardo Carmichael in the next year (mixtape, album, videos, singles, big movements est)?

Expect to hear a lot of new music coming out from Leonardo Carmichael. I have a new song it’s called “My Love” Written by Nastassja ‘Wizzard’ Hammond and myself. It’s a tribute to artiste’s like Musiq, D’angelo, glen lewis, Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway and Luther Vandross. I’ve been on lock down writing a lot of songs. Oh, Jah Cure and I have songs on the Stonehenge Riddim which is the track for "I DO", so one of the producers invited me to be a part of Cure’s video shoot. I am on that and funny enough they did a Techno remix and had me playing the electric drums in a few scenes so you should like that. I should write atleast two Albums/Mix Tapes by this year’s end.

Shout outs to:

God ‘big up yuhself’ my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ

My mother Geraldine Morgan, a living example of true love and a true mother. I love you mom

My church Fellowship Tabernacle; Pastor Al Miller and Overseer of the church’s Education Assistance Program: Mrs Richardson who sent me to Edna Manley College, University of the West Indies and paid my plane ticket to go to Berklee College of Music for which I received a part scholarship. Who never stopped believing in me. Thank you FelTab forever!

Nastassja ‘Wizzard’ Hammond dear friend, producer, co-writer, Jemoi ‘Twis’ Montieth Recording, Mixing and Mastering Engineer, Producer : Rickman Jamplified Warren, Recording Artiste, Song Writer and Producer: Courtney ‘Yogi’ John. Entrepreneur, Producer and Promoter: Walter ‘Tha Future’ Russell. My good friends from Tru Cronicles (A rock band I played for) Ryan, Kenny, Ainsley for the sleepless nights of music

The Staff of the Edna Manley College’s School of Music, UWI Singers, Panoridim Steel Band Orchestra and everyone who has contributed to my life in anyway, even the haters.

RIP Granma (Amy Morgan) I’m always greatful for the love you gave to our family!

Who is Bobby Franchise

Interviewee: Bobby Franchise

Who is Bobby Franchise is the question we are going to answer today. He is a humble but also serious guy, from the rap game in Halifax Canada. He has conviction in his voice and has no reason to be fake or act like he is someone else. Bobby’s Bio has been put into great detail on his Internet networking accounts (you can read it on his Myspace: http://www.myspace.com/envyfranchise) for many reasons but the main thing is: to be open with the people interacts with. His life growing up was difficult, facing tragedy after tragedy its no wonder his music seems effortless and his drive endless. He is sure that if he keeps at his writing and performance that he will indeed make it to the TV screen and make millions. He respects people who respect him and plans on bringing them with him or returning favors when he can, reppin’ his record label “CA” to the fullest with the soon to be released mixtape, he is sure to leverage himself. HOOKEDUPB and Bobby Franchise had a conversation over the phone to bring you answers to the question: “Who is Bobby Franchise”:

Out of all your talents what one do you think is your strongest?

I would say my writing abilities- I mastered my craft! I worked on it- I make sure everything is on point and sounds good.

Skosha Shane Sidney is your producer does he make the beats from scratch or does he use instrumentals?

Ya, he is my friend; he definitely makes them from scratch- they come right from his head! Skosha and Dirty B make my beats those are the guy’s I’m taking with me to the end. If you don’t know Skosha’s beats than you will soon! He produced a previous mixtape called: “Heavy Hitters Vol. #1”, … he is also producing the "Who is Bobby Franchise" mixtape which is gonna be CRAZY….but for the new album that I’ll be working on, I’m going to shop around for beats. I get a lot of my attention in Hip Hop from the singles I put out, the other mixtape (“Heavy Hitters Vol. #1”) didn’t get pushed that hard.

You are working on a mixtape called: “Who is Bobby Franchise” can you elaborate on that?

Straight up, I came up in group home, my mom gave me up when I was 10.. I was in permanent care for 9 years…my father was killed when I was 17, he was beatin to death by two guys then they tied him to a shopping cart and the cops found him in a lake , Who is Bobby Franchise is an album based on my life …I’m that dude that had no luck really, and I’m not asking people to feel sorry for me, I’m proud of who I am now. Everything that has happened made me stronger!

Other than working on your mixtape what have you been doing to progress from the bottom up?

Oh man I use Facebook to the fullest I could win a Facebook award on there for networking…I know people from all over the world on there! THANK YOU FACEBOOK for real man! Also practicing- I just keep at it. I never let anyone put me down, jealous ones will try and put you down, I see it everyday!

I know some people say that other people’s life stories are unbelievable, which is something you have probably heard before; why did you make yours so explicit on your artist bio?

Well, because I want to be open with people. I just want people to know I’m real, that my story is as real as it gets. I’m tired of playing games with people! I don’t go overboard like I don’t mention names of course.

I am working on a movie it’s a Trilogy, its three movies (coming out later in life). I know Ellen Page she is world famous, she got a role in X-Men3, and also played the main role in JUNO. I plan on meeting up with her, and giving her the script for the movie that will be titled: “Based on a True Story”- everyone will want to see it just for the title!

How long have you had a good following in Halifax for?

In Halifax when I was about 13-14 years old I was a poster boy for a skateboard shop; I was a model for them for years! I was just a kid nobody really respected me. But I get stopped on the street now, like I was at the Drake concert and people came up to me like: "are you Bobby Franchise”, and that’s cool.

What is the music scene like in Halifax Nova Scotia?

Man, it’s every man for himself! Huh, I don’t like these rappers I hang out with real people, that do real things like work est…all the people are stuck-up, and all these people have never left Halifax before so when you don’t leave you don’t know what there is out there. I don’t want to come off as a hater; Halifax has a good scene there’s lots of talent, but if everyone worked together it would be a lot easier!

Why did you choose to tattoo your face with the maple leaf?

Because, I rep Canada to the fullest! I wouldn’t want to live anywhere else for lots of reasons- like health care. It’s a great country to live in and I hope you agree too. Also I want to be remembered … I feel I am unique … and that’s what will take me places ..

I seen pictures of your new tattoo; how many do you have now?

I just got a new sleeve…I have about 14- 15. The new sleeve is like the Louis Vuitton print but the LV is replaced with: CA- record label, my record label. It’s (record label) on the come up and it’s going to make me a million dollars, I’m going to take it as far as I can- I’m going to rep it to the fullest.

Debuting “Pizzle Poppin”

Interviewee: S ToDa Pizzle AKA Silent Poet

S ToDa Pizzle AKA Silent Poet is a guy who has always been involved in the Hip Hop culture but didn’t decide to take his talents serious ‘till recently. Debuting a new mixtape, “Pizzle Poppin” releasing on Toronto’s famous Caribana weekend (July 29- Aug. 1, 2010). He likes to: battle rap, have fun, make music, and perform! S ToDa Pizzle has been doing shows and has more planned for the near future, so try and get out to some of his shows when he does perform. Find out more about S ToDa Pizzle, his pursuits, and his point of view on Hip Hop- here by reading the interview brought to you by HOOKEDUPB:

S ToDa Pizzle; was that name inspired by Snoop Dog?

No, no, no. Not at all, actually it comes from my original name: Silent Poet! I didn’t like it- people know me by that name (Silent Poet); to me it’s only so-so! So I changed it up to: S Pizzle AKA S ToDa Pizzle, but I use both names (Silent Poet & S Pizzle), either or are fine!

What are some of the things you have done as a Toronto Rapper (calab’s, videos, ‘tapes ect) so far?

Ah, well my CD (mixtape) suppose to come out hopefully some time this week or at least by Carabana. Its all done- I did it all myself!

I really don’t have videos, well I have one but it’s a low budget video- it’s not the greatest, just something for the people.

Callabo’s not really I like to keep in the fam uno…I’d rather work with people I know- at the end of the day, those are the people that will have your back and look out for you.

How was the Indie Showcase on July 24th @ the Central, that you performed at?

Basically, it’s a showcase for indie artists to go up on stage. There was about 10- 15 artists there that night, and I was one of them. It was nuts- everyone was drunk, so that could have helped (lol). Canadian Indie Movement say: the key to success is SUPPORT! So if nobody comes or cant sell tickets for the show- nobody wants to listen to you (well people will listen but not at the show). If the all ready people know you, they know the music. Lots of my people showed so that’s what made it good for me! Also, I’m doing another show Aug. 5, 2010 @ 67 Richmond St. E- it should be nice!

What track(s) did you perform at the show?

I did three songs:

- “I’m a Warrior”

- “Put That Work In”

- “Scooping Brauds”

“Plenty Money Freestyle” is one of the latest tracks put up on your Facebook account why did you pick that one to upload?

Ah, I picked that one cause it’s a known beat! Just wanted people to see what I am doing- it’s a promo thing, an attention grabber! On the mixtape there are more beats that people haven’t heard before (underground beats). I did it in my own way sorta flip it uno. I should be uploading more soon. Right now I’m kinda just chilling back…

What are the details on the mixtape you are working on?

It’s out at the end of the week (July 30- 31, 2010).

I got about five features on the mixtape all of them are from Toronto. There’s: Mystery he’s kinda like a Reggae artist, Baptist, Trophy, my boy Spooks, and this girl named Naughty. I wasn’t really trying to have too many features this will be my first mixtape; I like to keep it in the fam!

Will there be a theme to the mixtape?

Every song on the mixtape is all about things that have happened to me! So it’s: all real! I like to make music, so I might as well make songs about my experiences.

Have you ever done battle raps or beat boxing back in the day?

Ya, I do some battle raps still. I used to always write battle raps, when I wasn’t on the tip of making songs. So I kind of came up with battle raps. I could still do it today but not my thing right now, but battle rappers are the guys getting signed. Like: Freeway, Jay Mills, and Cassidy – the list goes on! Cause I guess they can be ghostwriters, that makes me think that I should get back into it. Don’t be surprised if you see me battle people in the future…

What do you feel the pros and cons are regarding the Hip Hop scene as a whole?

Pro-

There’s a lot of talent in Toronto, The Toronto Scene- it’s on the rise! Before, like 10 years ago the scene want too big but now there’s all kinds of guys doing it.

Con-

There’s a lot of Haters in Toronto! But if you don’t have haters you must doing something wrong! So the good comes with the bad I guess, everybody is different- some people like the stuff, and some don’t like it!

Jay- Z, Diddy, or Lil Wayne?

Basically, I respect every artist in their own way ‘cuz they all have done a lot for the Hip Hop scene but Diddy and Lil' Wayne have things they done that I’m not too fond about so imma have to go with the Jigga Man!
