This One’s for the Young Market Entrants

Interviewee: Charles Williams AKA Kidd Dream

Like most artists or any profession, for that matter, it all starts with a vision or passion to begin whatever your heart desires. Kidd Dream is a young guy in high school who wants to be a top Hip Hop artist in Pittsburgh USA one day. He is funny and can relate to many people, and is excited to hit the market with his first Hip Hop mixtape called: “Bent Hats and Backpacks”.  He releases VBogs on Facebook, and is working behind the scenes with 7fingerz an independent record label, as earlier stated he is currently in high school, and is focusing on graduating too. Currently studying the entertainment industry on his spare time so he is prepared for becoming a top Hip Hop artist. Kidd Dream writes music whenever he can, and visiting the studio when he gets a chance. He plans on putting out his best possible work rather than what ever he makes. Another thing that is admirable, is that he wants to make music that reflects who he is, nothing less! We will have to wait and hear the final project to see what Kidd Dream has to offer the underground world of music in 2011. Kidd Dream agreed to participating in a phone interview with HOOKEDUPB MAG to discuss his goals for the future as an aspiring musician, read here:

1. What’s the music scene like in Pittsburgh for a high school student like your self?

It’s alright! There are alot of programs I’m involved with. I’m part of “Lighthouse Project”, it takes you around the city of Pittsburgh to different studios and introduces you to different people who are into music. There are people my age who are not part of any programs, and that makes me more noticeable, and gives me an advantage.

 2. Why haven’t you released any music online yet?

The real reason is I haven’t released anything on the Internet is because over time I listened to my music and it didn’t really portray me. What I mean I don’t want to come off as “corny”. I want to put out music that people can listen to, and think “ya that’s him”- its all me! I just wasn’t feelin’ It, for real- for real!

3. How do you plan on making your entrance into the indie music world in the coming months?

Takin’ over the Internet, and taking over my city, trying to do collaborations with anybody. I will work with anybody and people can teach me something too. I’m just gonna grind, grind, grind that’s it!

4. What do you think the “hype” is on Kidd Dream?

Oh man a lot of people know me as a funny sarcastic, also I can relate to a lot of people…I lived two lives, had a life where I started out living in the suburbs, than moved to the ghetto; so I can relate to a lot of people. White boys can love one part of my music, and the hood can love one part of my music too. So I can relate, plus I’m cute (lol)!

5. What kind of Hip Hop do you make? (Conscious, hardcore, comedy)

I make music that is real, that comes from the soul- soulful music! I write all my lyrics I’m versatile, and I can sing too. So I don’t want to label my self as just one genre or style- that’s not cool! I do all kinds of things, I did a remix to “Party in The U.S.A” that’s going to be on my coming mixtape: “Bent Hats and Backpacks”- that’s real!

6. Who do you look up to in the underground music scene in Pittsburgh?

People I look up to in Pittsburgh…everyone knows about Wiz Khalifa now, Mac Miller, S Money, Boaz, Y Money, and many more, there’s a lot, but those are the people I look up to!

7. How often do you go to the studio and lay down music?

I usually try to go every week, but I’m a full time student so most of my time is goes to homework and sports…I write constantly so even when I don’t get a chance to lay down new music I have stuff ready for when I do. School is my priority now though.

8. What do you think of the two different strategies artists’ use: getting fans to pay for music on iTunes, OR giving it away for free downloads online?

Honestly if you have the name and you feel like you want to make something off dat, but if you’re an up and coming artist, people aren’t going to purchase it. My first mixtape- I’m going to be giving it away. When people hear me they will probably buy my music.

I have a feeling I’m going to be mainstream, I’m staying positive. The only thing you can do is stay positive!

9. What is your artistic new years resolution going to be for 2011?

Is to try and give more tangible products to my listeners. Putting out some videos, the mixtape, Grinding hard, making a presence on the club scene, not waiting so long to put out the second mixtape. That’s what Lil Wayne did, he is everywhere, and Wiz Khalifa took the Internet by storm! Everything is by the Internet… that’s all I want to do make myself known in my city and become a better artist. I would also like to do more interviews as well.

10. Shout outs/ last comments?

First, I would like to thank god, also I would like to thank my mom and dad for giving me an opportunity to believe in my dreams. Also, I would like to give a big shout out to my big bro Glenn Smith (y money) without you I wouldn’t be doing this …. I Wanna give a special shout out to my dj, Dj brickz (Rick Burton)…. TeamDream x TeamImagination x 7 Fingerz Entertainment …….Bent Hats & Backpacks Fool
